Soundings

2013

These sculptures were made on Rodeo Beach at the Marin Headlands. On sunny days, I dug holes into the sand, making sure they were round and dark, and deposited breath and sound into these basins. The sounds varied, sometimes soft and rising slowly, sometimes loud and gutteral, effecting the shape of the hole. I used plaster to cast the negative form on-site, then re-cast those in bronze, so that the sonic positive was regained, alchemized in golden form.

Thank you to ArtWorks Foundry technicians and Peter L’abbe (RIP) for helping me make these works.
